INTRODUCTORY LESSON

IMAGE A - CREATIVE PIECE

North Island - Acrylics/Impasto on Canvas (120 x 285cm)

BODY OF WORK 2012

I don't know if this is my best produced piece of creative work, but it was certainly the most time consuming consisting of 152 canvases. Through experimenting with the width of the canvases and by painting them randomly at different times, no two pieces 'perfectly' align together, further creating the story behind my work in a visual act. The artwork itself aims to portray a sense of being disconnected but concurrently attached, drawing on my own experiences of my time spent in New Zealand. This in conjunction with the puzzle form of the artwork relates to the audience by showing a sense of individuality and uniqueness although being united based on common elements.

IMAGE B - GREAT PIECE OF ARCHITECTURE

Fallingwater (Kaufmann House), Frank Lloyd Wright, 1935

This is a superb example of architecture where an immense amount of thought, imagination and originality has gone into the construction of the house. With the house designed to be structured astride the waterfall through the use of cantilevers, Frank Lloyd Wright has harmonised the structure within its natural environment making it part of the waterfall itself. Through this unique strategy to achieve this design and relationship with nature, Frank Lloyd Wright has undoubtedly challenged the perspective and perhaps even practice of many architectural thinkers.

IMAGE C - ORIGINAL PHOTO OF SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL

This is an original photo of the view of the sunset from the 70th floor of Meriton Serviced Apartments, Pitt St. What makes it so beautiful is the contrast between the bustling city beneath the radiant, tranquil sun which appears like a blanket soon to be smothering the world below with its light, alleviating the troubles and chaos of reality. With way the light is captured in the photo, vibrant and extending over the horizon, it reinforces the inevitable disparity between the forces of nature and the urban city.
